„Pizda Materna were quite popular crust band here in the 90s. The members of the band were mainly from other slovenian band, Scuffy Dogs (who had more of a punk/ska/reggae thing going on) + female singer Lea and male singer Richard from Gorizia, Italy (who used to sing in Warfare?, run Nuclear Sun Punk records and sings in reformed Eu’s Arse). This was supposed to be a 7″ record, but due to pressing plant fuck-up it’s 11 minutes long 12″. They also had split LP with Brigade O.D. from Macedonia and split (live?) tape with Maggot Slayer Overdrive from UK which I don’t have, so if someone has it, I’d like to hear it. I’m sure if both myself and Matjaz Lican of Atomic Fart were ever to sort out access to the Internet and E-mail we’d be in serious debt with the phone people by now, but not having that luxury this interview was in good old fashioned and not so hip posted letter form, anyway in true pen pal tradition we have traded many tapes/records etc. etc and one certain recording was of PIZDA MATERNA his partner lea who is one part of this duel male/femail vocalised {screams rants and raves} crazy hardcore Slovenija Punk/Metal political band, and I knew that readers of Ripping Thrash Zine would love to hear about them. (of course if you don’t want to send all the way to Slovenija you can get a studio recording by sending a tape and S.A.E. to the Dee Fekt address) but anybody who is interested in Pizda Materna records and some of the best quality live tapes I’ve ever heard of some of your favourite crusty punk bands from around the world then Matjaz Lican is your man (See Reviews) OK onto the interview. answers by Lea.

Q1..TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT SLOVENIJA, IT’S PUNK HISTORY, AND WHY YOU HAVE COME INVOLVED IN THIS CULTURE?.

The Punk Rock in Slovenija started soon after the first Punk rock wave in England, first bands were formed in 1977 in Ljubljana ‘Beograd, Zagreb (we were still Yugoslavia-remember??) and were musically a copy of the early UK bands but the lyrics were dealing mainly with local troubles and topics and were quite hard for the community/socialist public moral and society so many bands and Punks had allot of troubles, people thought they were nazis and similar shit. At the beginning of the 80’s the scene was really strong with many bands/zines/venues – it was really great, a lot of touring bands came across the country, then in a few years everything has gone(or almost), many bands changed the music style, people just disappeared from the scene, some of them got into the music business…. In the past few years the scene is growing again but like always for many it is just a fashion or a way to have fun, still there are some people and bands that fight and work for the true d.i.y punk. I became involved just by chance as I met some people in a pub where i used to go after school ( when I was 15 ) they were older than I was they were going to gigs and parties so I joined them as I liked it. I started to be more involved when I met my Actual boyfriend and some of my friends. he was booking gigs (and we were going around to every gig in the area)some of the bands were really kind to us and took us with them in their vans across Europeso I met more punx and talked to them and here I am now.

Q2..IT’S BEEN SAID THAT MOST PUNKS ETC ONLY LAST TILL THEY ARE 25 YEARS OLD THEN DIE INTO NORMALITY. WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS??

I’m not sure why it is like this but I think mostly because they get into punk for fun & fashion and once you finish the school (University) then you need to find a job and of course you have to change your image, so you simply change to fit into a ..normal person to be accepted from the society(friends/family) but luckily some of us/them are strong enough to survive with all the shit we get from all around and my parents realised that I am happy as I am and they love me for what I am.

Q3..TATTOOS AND PIERCING ARE FROWNED UPON HERE IN THE UK – WHAT REACTION DO YOU GET IN SLOVENIJA… I KNOW YOU DO PIERCINGS , HOW’S THAT COMING ALONG ??

Well I started doing piercing about five years ago. In that time I was the first that started with it and SASO (the other Pizda Materna member ) was one of the first to do tattoos, it was hard because it was something new here and people were afraid and disgusted so it was almost impossible to find a job with piercings on your face- and even kids at school had troubles.

But since two years it’s a big fashion ( thanx to the rave culture+ Prodigy) and people are more tolerant now as well, like every new thing it needs time to get accepted by the larger “audience” of course it still makes a difference if you have a single piercing or a small tattoo (this is fashion) but soon as you have more of them then your a primitive,dirty,a drug dealer… BLOODY PREJUDICES……..

Q4..THE BAND GET A LOT OF FLACK FOR HAVING AND TAKING A POLITICAL STANCE- WHY IS THIS AND DO YOU THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE JUST WANT DISPOSABLE PUNK/H.C. TO PRETEND TO REBEL AT..A M.T.V. PRETEND SUBCULTURE??

Pizda Materna means “Mother’s Cunt” but here us used as a way of expression like ‘what the fuck!’ or ‘Jesus christ’ in sexist it’s a provocation and it works because even the “Liberal” Punx sometimes are afraid to put the full name on posters they put P.M. only, our lyrics are short political but sometimes written in a different way, so we have to explain many times at gigs the meaning of the songs.

Well like I said before Punx are Punx and they like to drink and have fun so some get bored from what they want to say and they start to complain or provocative with shit like;”Kill,Kill,Kill the animals!” or “Flesh is law”, it even happened that some one jumped on the stage and asked why we were Anti-Police, I think you don’t need a big brain to know they are fucking bastards, many times they come into our gigs and we don’t want them there so we protest and we aren’t afraid to voice our fucking opinion, we fucking hate them, they are stupid arrogant scum.!!!!! the other songs are about Religion , Animal suffering, against hard drug abuse, borders….for me the music is a way of communication and to share ideas with other people if there is someone with a different opinion based on facts then – OK i can understand and have respect but on the other hand I can’t tolerate all the bullshit we get from the audience, for example none will convince me that drug dealers are good and that we should let them do their ‘job’ at gigs, that is stupid!!! you can’t sing about peace, freedom and a better world and then buy the cocaine or heroine from the bastards who are exploiting the poor people & make a profit from the death. if your not strong enough to face reality and you need this shit to feel better then probably suicide would be the best solution at least you don’t have so many victims on your conscience.

Q5..SO WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM WITH THE SPLIT 7″ WITH BRIGADE O.D. HAS THE BAND RECTIFIED THIS PROBLEM AND WILL YOU BE VENTURING INTO VINYL/C.D. LAND AGAIN AFTER ALL THESE PROBLEMS??

The problem with the split 7″ P.M./Brigade OD is that when we got the vinyl’s back from the Czech pressing plant there was some unexplainable noise on both sides of the record the Dat was OK so we think it was their mistake. The company here which we do the records said that they were right but the Czech insists that everything is OK so till now we haven’t solved anything, yet (since April 99) I need to say that the first 7″ was pressed on 12″ size (again their fault) so we had to modify the sleeve for sure we are not gonna work with them anymore so the future releases will be probably done in Italy or Germany.

Q6..IS THERE ANY HOPE FOR THE WORKING CLASS, WHAT WITH THE *NEW ELITE OF THE RICH USING THEIR POWER TO KEEP THE UNDERCLASS AT BAY WITH EMPLOYMENT WAGE CLAUSES AND THEIR OWN POLICE + PRIVATE FRENCED OFF COMMUNES. IS THIS A NEW US AND THEM OR JUST THE SAME OLD DOG EAT DOG HUMAN GREED *(I.E. old money as opposed to new self millionaires)

Huh, that’s a hard one..In this country there’s such a chaos all around they say that we must join the E.C. so we need to have European prices for everything , but wages are low which is a stupid paradox an approximate wage is 350 quid per month but if you work in a factory you can get around 150-200 quid, if you work in a shop or a pub 250-300 quid but if you sit in parliament or if you are a manager you can get more than 1000 quid.

the essential food costs like everywhere in Europe or much more the petrol is abit cheaper, if you want to but a house it can cost from 700-1000 a square meter. we pay a rent for our flat £130 every month (no phone/heating) + around £40 for the bills (Water/Electricity) and my boyfriend earns £300 working in a hell of a job in a ware house (I an relate to that one DeeFekt)

The employment is around 13 % and there’s almost no social money , if your lucky enough you get £50 per month but not for more than 3 months in a row(where I live only in winter)..you almost have no rights at your job, the unions are just a scenery they don’t help you very much. they can’t give you the wage for a few months and if you quit your it is your own fault and you don’t get any benefits, there is some kind of help for very poor families but it is a spit in the ocean they really make you feel like Shiite.

The new rich elite is getting richer on out backs and they use their connections + friendships for more profit and dirty business. you can see new cars and houses all around and you just wonder how do they get all this money (for sure not with their wages) same old story !.

Q7..DO YOU MANY PROBLEMS WITH PEOPLE OVER INDULGING WITH DRUGS AND ALCOHOL, CAUSING PROBLEMS AT GIGS??

There’s always someone who is turning up my nerves I hate drunk kids making problems at the gigs and I hate violent drunk people in general . I think that drinking for having fun is cool sometimes but not drinking for making troubles trying to show others how strong you are or when they drink because they have problems and they are not strong enough to fight the problems but drunk enough to fight with other people, I don’t think that alcohol and drugs are the only way to communicate and be part of a group, being stoned to death everyday is just a big problem that you have with yourself.

You can’t fight for a better life if your drunk & too stoned, I think that this kind of people are not coming to gigs for the music or the ideology and to do some activities but only because they are bored.

Q8..SO WHAT IS CURRENTLY ON THE BANDS TURNTABLES/DECKS? WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE NEXT BIG TREND FOR THE KIDS TO EAT UP(YOU’VE HAD YOUR M.T.V. POP-PUNK/COMMERCIAL HIP HOP & RAP WATERED DOWN HEAVY METAL/TOUGH GUY HARD-CORE, WHAT CANDY WILL THE CORPORATE CHURN OUT NEXT??

In the band we are into different kinds of music, that also the reason that it is hard to do new stuff, we have different opinions of what we want to play. Pizda Materna is also doing a kind of performance on the stage to maximise the energy.

I like various stuff: Cr@ss/Icons of flith/Rudimentry Peni/Dirt/Toxic waste/Subhumans/and also the Amebix/Axe Grinder/Cress/Nausea/Police Bastard/ … when I need something to relax or when I pierce I like to hear some Indian or African tribal stuff or folk music (Modern). For the others I can say that the singer and bass player are more or less into the same stuff the guitarist likes rage or more commercial stuff, the drummer American hard-core, the terminst electronical stuff ambient, drum ‘n’ bass , I don’t know for the other terminist-probably the same , we don’t spend a lot of time together as we live in different places and we don’t talk allot about our private life, I don’t think that anyone has the time to follow M.T.V I think its also too boring and a waste of time.

Q9..WHY IS D.I.Y SO IMPORTANT TO YOU WOULDN’T IT BE EASY JUST TO ALLOW SOME RECORD COMPANY TO DO IT FOR YOU??.

D.I.Y is very important cause you have the control on what you’re doing. it might be easier to have a company to do it all for you, but they tell you how to play and what to say…so you become just a product. and it’s much more fun to do it by yourself. it’s a way to spend your time On what you like to do.

Q10..IS PUNK/HARDCORE JUST ANOTHER SMALL PETTY SOCIETY WITH IT’S ARSEHOLES, POWER MONGERS AND SEA OF EGOS (this includes Musicians +Scensters etc.) DON’T YOU EVER THINK FUCK IT AND WANT A NORMAL LIFE??

I think I have a normal life- at least for me is normal, I do what I think is important and good besides punk + gigs I like to spend my time going around the countryside with friends, going to the sea to swim, riding around with the bike or spend the evening doing Aerobic & Fitness (that’s my drug -I like to feel how alive I am) I believe it makes me happy.

I’m into the band to have fun and communicate, to tell my point of view to the others and not because I’m bored, I do believe in what I say and do.

I can’t say what punk/hc really is sometimes is the best thing and the other time I can get really disappointed with it, I think it is what you make out of it, how you live and understand it and what good you can take out of it like everything there are good and bad sides of punk/h.c too! I think the most important is to be happy with what you do- to be yourself, you must live every moment of your life as a special moment, you have to make it special because your the only one who can.

Don’t let anyone to control or influence your decisions, punks is to be yourself with respect for others around you. it’s about freedom and equality sometimes punk has too many rules so don’t follow them if you don’t like them, they can be the same oppressive rules that society is forcing you to follow.

Q11..RIGHT FINALLY GIVE US AN IDEA OF WHAT PIZDA MATERNA PLAN FOR THE FUTURE??

I have no idea what we are gonna do in the future, I hope we will still play together, we’re all living in different towns so we usually see each other at gigs or rare rehearsals, we will definitely release the split 7″ with Bridage OD from Macedonia one way or another.

We would like to tour but for now it’s impossible-perhaps in the next millennium, and maybe we will meet Jesus and he will join the band as best drummer ever… then he will die for drug + alcohol abuse, and then the aliens will come and we will tour the space and make another 7″ with the space cowboys and some one from the Czech pressing plant will work in the pressing plant on Jupiter so the record will be fucked up again.

Jesus (my father from Mexico) will resurrect again and kill them all with his new cyber cock and the president of the U.S.A will ask us to play at the White House – and we will paint it black & Satan will come to save us…as a new drummer (we change them often) but that’s a new long story well thanks for showing interest in Pizda Materna and thanks for the interview…for the Japanese version of this interview please contact our new drummer in Tokyo bye and take care…LEA
